SABATTUS – A man accused of engaging police in an eight-hour standoff on Elm Street Sunday night remained at the Androscoggin County Jail a day later.

Brian Woodbury, 23, of Sabattus, was being held without bail on a charge of creating a police standoff. Woodbury was also arrested on a slew of warrants stemming from previous charges.

The standoff began at about 4 p.m. Sunday and ended just after midnight when police and tactical team members stormed the Elm Street home.

“They found him in the attic of the home when they entered,” said Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland. “He was hiding under some plastic on the attic floor.”

The standoff began when police tried to arrest Woodbury on warrants charging him with earlier traffic offenses. Woodbury disappeared into the Elm Street home and refused to come out, McCausland said.

After police learned there were guns inside the house, the tactical team was called and officers from several area departments came to the scene.

McCausland said a dozen tactical team members were involved, as well as five negotiators. Police said they used a telephone and a remote-control robot to try to contact Woodbury while he remained inside the house. The attempts were unsuccessful.

A group of people inside the house with Woodbury cleared out of the building as the standoff unfolded, police said. No shots were fired during the incident.

Police said Sabattus police initially tried to arrest Woodbury on warrants charging him with four earlier traffic offenses and failure to appear in court. Woodbury has previous convictions for driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.

Under Maine law, creating a police standoff is a civil violation. A person convicted of the charge can be ordered to make restitution to each police department that responded.
