Belly Dancing for Beginners: Tuesdays, Sept 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. No prior dance experience is required; the class is suitable for all ages, skill levels and body types. Belly Dancing Aerobics: Tuesdays, Sept 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. The class will focus on a deep muscle and cardiovascular workout. Racewalk, Don’t Run! The Best Way to Get Fit After 40: Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m., part of the Successful Aging Series. Racewalking involves the whole body in one great, gliding, heart-pumping, joint-flexing, muscle-working, calorie-burning motion. When appropriate, it can deliver everything “over-40s” need for fitness in one exercise and minimize the risk of joint injury inherent in running.Presented by Stacey Cavers, health and fitness graduate of USM Sports Medicine. Take Charge! Health Screening: Friday, Sept. 10, from 3 to 6 p.m. Get a free health screening, including total cholesterol and HDL, blood pressure, a risk factor assessment and a consultation with a health professional. A referral can be made to specific medical services if necessary. In the Fleet Room.
Basic Decks: Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. Part of the Do-It-Herself Series at Home Depot. The professionals will show how to build a basic deck. It is a hands-on class – so dress for mess. The class will be held outside unless rainy. Free.
Stand on Your Own Two Legs: Thursday, Sept. 16, at 5:30 p.m. Part of the Entres to Health Series. Dr. Michael Leke will discuss peripheral vascular disease and Restless Leg Syndrome. A heart-healthy meal will include roast pork with mustard sauce, onion and thyme mashed potatoes, green beans almandine, tossed salad and a poached pear with sauce for dessert. Register and prepay by Sept. 13 to hold a spot. Cost, $10.
Support Group for Infant Death and Pregnancy Loss: Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. St. Mary’s introduces a new program for individuals, couples, family and friends who have experienced a pregnancy loss or infant death. The group offers a safe and supportive environment where people can share their feelings associated with loss, find answers to difficult questions, seek comfort in others with similar experiences and better understand the grieving process. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Potvin Room at St. Mary’s. Tammy Brule and Leanne Langlois, RTS certified perinatal grief support specialists, facilitate. Mental Illness: Information for Families: Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. A presentation by Karen Abendroth, LMSW, and Andie Wishman, LMSW, who will provide insight on how to be an effective caregiver. The session will provide a better understanding of the complex world of mental illness. In addition, tools to help be supportive to those who are suffering will be given. In the Fleet Room. Free.
High Tea and Antiques: Saturday, Sept. 25, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Bring a favorite English antique and learn more about it from local antiques expert, Carlie Biscoe. Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss Series: Tuesdays, Sept. 28, Oct. 5, 12 and 19, at 6:30 p.m. Hypnotherapy can be an effective tool for weight loss when combined with a sensible diet and exercise. It helps overcome cravings, snacking, overeating and eating when stressed, bored or depressed. It can help a person eat healthier, lose weight gradually and generally feel better. Facilitated by Valerie St. Clair, a certified hypnotherapist. Space is limited. Cost, $40; prepay by Sept. 24 to hold a spot.
