Dear Sun Spots: Hopefully you or one of your readers can provide me with some information. I have been seeing a lot of car magnets of a yellow ribbon with “Support our Troops” written on it. I would like to have one and have been looking for one, but have been unsuccessful in locating one. Could you find out where I may be able to get one and the cost? Thank you for any information you can provide. – No Name, Sabattus.

Answer: Our customer service department has been selling some of these ribbon magnets here at the Sun Journal on 104 Park St., Lewiston. They cost $4 each, and half of the money benefits the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. We also have one in the same shape and in the colors of the American flag, also $4, and another, smaller flag-sized one, which is $2. Please feel free to stop by. Our business hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dear Sun Spots: I need your advice and also some from your devoted readers. We have a fairly large pond, and a few years ago we cleaned and dug out almost all of the long cattails that grow all around the pond. Now there are twice as many growing back, and it is taking up the space of the pond. Does anyone know how to stop these from growing back? We would love a clean pond. I appreciate the answer to this problem, thanks so much. Please call (207) 375-9901 if you can help. – No Name, No Town.

Answer: In addition to responses from readers who may be willing to share some of their tips with you, Sun Spots checked with Sun Journal gardening columnist Jody Goodwin who says:

Cattails grow in wetland areas, and she stresses that any kind of herbicide would be catastrophic to that ecosystem. Live with them or pull them. That is her only advice.

Dear Sun Spots: Once again I would like to thank all Sun Spots readers for their generous contribution of arts and craft supplies for the children’s activities at a nearby family campground. It has been an awesome summer with and for the kids. And I apologize to those I could not get to. I am still interested, but very, very busy these days.

Now I need your help again.

Every camping season we plan holiday weekends for the kids and campers: Easter, Halloween and Christmas in July. Santa or The Easter Bunny come and visit and hand out candy and gifts, join in the hayrides, etc. We decorate the rec hall for the occasion and at Halloween, it is a haunted house. My request is this: Does anyone have holiday decorations and/or costumes they do not use or need any more that they would be willing to donate to the campground? It could be artificial trees, lights, scary Halloween costumes and decor, Santa suits etc.

The kids enjoy the holiday weekends, and I enjoy playing the parts. It would save us having to run out to get these things each season. Thank you so much, all of you.

I can be reached at work Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (207) 784-3227 (Stone’s Pet Supply) or at home after 6 p.m. at (207) 783-3988. I am busy with the kids late Friday to Sunday. Looking forward to hearing from readers. – Drew Desjardins, Lewiston.
