There are a large number of seasonal residents of Rockwood that are boiling mad, saddened and depressed. They have been evicted from the 56 camping sites at Old Mill Campground. It’s been sold to a Canadian family for private use.
Some of these campers have spent their summers at this location for over 35 years. These are retired, working-class people who wanted to spend their leisure time boating and fishing while camping at the beautiful pristine sites on Moosehead Lake.
Now, with few other options in the area, most of these seasonal residents will spend their food and gas money elsewhere.
It’s shocking and disappointing that the owners of Old Mill have taken this action without any consideration for the community.
The Pittston Farm also wants to sell, but their pride in the property and love of their community has led them to stipulate that the buyer keep the property open to the public.
We were sold out with no advance notice that the property was for sale while the owners lined their pockets.
The owners should know that they have created a big loss for us, other businesses at Moosehead, their town and, indeed, for the state.
It’s too late now. Historic and beautiful Old Mill will no longer provide enjoyment for our future generations.
Perhaps Maine towns should seriously consider the rezoning of such lake frontage to assure continued recreational use for certain irreplaceable parcels and not depend on the owners to do the right thing.
