EAST DIXFIELD – The descendants of George and Maude Hiltz gathered on Aug. 7 for the annual family reunion at the home of Nelson and Beverly Coolidge on Severy Hill. Many of the Hiltz members camp out and enjoy the extra time allowed to be with this extended family.

The annual auction of family heirlooms and other treasures netted $501 to help pay for the reunion expenses. Old family photographs of the parents with their children are the most sought-after items.

This year another tradition was started when a large photo of the parents with their 12 children was displayed. This led to family discussions and was used to pass on family history and other knowledge to the children and those who marry into the family.

Photos of family members serving in the armed forces were displayed. During the business meeting, the group recognized that many of the descendants had served in World War II, Vietnam, Desert Storm or the current war.

The group discussed the sacrifices that some family members have made, including a prisoner of war. The reunion president spoke of his experiences in Vietnam and how he wanted the family to aid family members who have someone serving in the war effort. Four cards were signed and sent to those who who are serving in the military.

A committee was formed for next year and a work party weekend will be held on Memorial weekend 2005. A fire pit at the camping site needs to be rebuilt. The next Hiltz reunion will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005.
