RUMFORD – Scott Christiansen, River Valley Growth Council economic developer, told the board Wednesday night that Abbott Farm Plaza owner Druker Co. of Boston has agreed to deed the former shopping center to the town of Rumford.
The shopping center has been virtually vacant since Ames Department Store went bankrupt two years ago. The plaza’s last remaining tenant, the Dollar Store, is moving to the Mexico Plaza later this month.
He said the growth council has been working with the Druker Co. for more than a year to sell or donate the sprawling, multibuilding property about two miles west of the downtown along Route 2.
“This is a great Route 2 retail opportunity. I don’t know what Rumford will do with it, but if Rumford decides to sell it, it could be filled by a good entrepreneur,” he said.
One of the items on the agenda for the Rumford selectmen’s meeting, set for 7 p.m. Thursday in the conference room of the Municipal Building, is a discussion on the status of the former shopping center.
“The best possible thing that could happen (with the shopping center) is to have that property transferred,” Christiansen said.
