BANGOR, Maine (AP) – A Lee man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a murder charge in the shooting death of his wife in July.

Carl Dyer, 50, entered the plea in Penobscot County Superior Court. His attorney, Nolan Tanous of Millinocket, told the judge that Dyer will be pursuing an insanity defense.

Dyer has been in custody since July 2 when police found Rosemarie Dyer, 52, lying on a couch in their home with a pool of blood on the floor next to her. She died two days later at Eastern Maine Medical Center from a single shotgun wound to her leg.

Dyer told a dispatcher when he reported the shooting that he was off his medication, according to a police affidavit.

He was indicted Aug. 2 on charges of murder by depraved indifference and reckless or criminally negligent manslaughter.
