LISBON – Registration for fall classes will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Lisbon Adult Education.
Computer courses will include Keyboarding I on Mondays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Computers for Complete Beginners, Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.; a 10-week Microsoft Word, Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m.
An Introduction to Excel class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. starting on Sept. 23 for eight weeks. An Introduction to PowerPoint class will meet for six weeks from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 21. A four-week Introduction to Internet and E-mail class will meet for six weeks starting Sept. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m.
A Certified Nursing Assistant class will start on Monday, Sept. 27. The class will meet on Monday and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. for clinicals. The application deadline is Sept. 16. To receive application packets, contact Lisbon Adult Education at 353-3037.
A five-week substitute teaching class will meet Tuesdays from 2:45 to 5 p.m. An American Red Cross Adult, Infant and Child First Aid/CPR course will start on Oct. 6 and will meet for three weeks from 6 to 9 p.m.
Health and fitness courses will include aerobics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning and continuing yoga on Tuesdays and ballroom dancing and swing dancing on Thursdays.
An Introduction to Photography class will start Sept. 23 and meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A watercolor painting class will meet on Thursdays starting Sept. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. and a basic drawing class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays starting Sept. 21.
Cooking classes will include two gourmet pizza nights starting Oct. 26 and a soup and stews night on Oct. 27.
A hunter safety class will start Sept. 21 Registration by phone (353-3037) is required. A Maine Driving Dynamics class will start Tuesday, Oct. 26, and meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The fee is $25, $5 for senior citizens, and must be paid in advance.
Academic courses include two classes that may be used to earn college credit through an articulation agreement with Central Maine Community College. Algebra will meet for 18 weeks from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays starting Sept. 23. Accounting will meet for 10 weeks from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Monday, Sept. 20. To earn the college credit for accounting, students must enroll in two semester courses. Other requirements apply to receive college credit for both classes.
Chemistry with lab will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays. A math refresher course and an English refresher course will be held to help adults prepare for college placement examinations.
The high school diploma program will be offered for adults 17 years old or older who are interested in earning a Lisbon High School diploma. Interested students should contact the adult education office at 353-3037 for an appointment.
Classes this semester will include American Literature from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and U.S. History Through Film from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays.
General Educational Development testing will be offered from 2:30 to 5 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Students must be 18 years old or older. Advanced registration is not required.
Accommodations in testing are available for adults with documented physical disabilities as well as learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and emotional or psychological disabilities.
Adult Basic Education services are available for residents of Lisbon or Durham. The services provide one-on-one tutoring for individuals who have difficulty with reading, writing, math or for English as a Second Language.
A Beginning Sign Language class will be offered on Mondays for seven weeks beginning Sept. 20. A course called Understanding the Holocaust will be held Mondays for eight weeks. The course will include the study of history, art, literature, poetry and film to examine the problem of 20th century genocide and the Holocaust in particular.
A writing fiction class will meet for eight weeks from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Sept. 23. A fall garden workshop will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20. Two parenting classes will be held: Good Discipline, Good Kids on Nov. 15 and Keeping Peace at Home on Nov. 29. Advanced registration is required. Free child care will be provided for children age 4 and up.
Several programs will have a family focus. Family fall walks in Beaver Park are planned for 3 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17.
A series of family craft workshops are planned. The classes will be for families with children ages 3 through 12. Children can take the classes free. The charge for adults is $5. All materials will be provided. The series will include Making a Model Aquarium on Sept. 22, Halloween Crafts Night on Oct. 13, Thanksgiving Crafts Workshop on Nov. 17 and Family Holiday Decoration Workshop on Dec. 8.
