RUMFORD – Adam Pratt and Ben Laflin scored goals 32 seconds apart in the first half and Hall-Dale received an outstanding performance by goalie Reid Durost in a 3-0 win against Mountain Valley in Mountain Valley Conference boys’ soccer action.
Mountain Valley has a completely revamped lineup with every player, except John Blais- playing a different position. This prompted wholesale substitutions throughout the game.
“This is a young team,” first-year Mountain Valley coach Wade McLaughlin said. “We graduated 10 seniors, so now every one, including the coaching staff is learning what can be done. To make matters worse, we’re playing without (all-state) Pat Harris who blew out his ACL.” Hall-Dale had started applying pressure early on, but Falcon goalie Corey Wilson (18 saves) proved up the task. It was evident that the Bulldogs were more skillful at advancing the ball into the offensive zone.
The pressure eventually paid off as Pratt, stationed by the right post, redirected a header into the far-left corner of the goal with 12:22 remaining in the first half.
The Mountain Valley defense, led by sweeper Mark Lacroix, Dylon Cayer and Phil Dubay, packed it in, trying to keep Hall-Dale at bay. The Bulldogs Eric Cooper put a shot on goal and Wilson blocked it. The rebound came straight out to Laflin, who one-timed it home for a 2-0 lead.
“We started to push the ball,” Hall-Dale coach Pete Johnson said. “Our midfielders did a good job of getting the ball to the forwards. They recognized what parts of the field was open and placed the ball it those areas.”
Mountain Valley certainly had its chances in the first half. Midfielders Byron Glaus and Jon Gamble controlled the ball, to set up scoring opportunities. Glaus hit the left post, while shots by Ed Booker and D.J. Gerrish were cradled by Durost (11 saves).
Hall Dale held a 30-15 advantage in shots and took six corner shots in the game.
Dan Voner scored on a penalty kick in the second half.
