BOSTON (AP) – Rescuers continued to search for the crew of a capsized fishing boat Saturday after the vessel sank in shallow waters between Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
The vessel Nancy Christine, based in Fairhaven, went down on Friday in about 40 feet of water in Muskeget Channel, about 4.5 miles south-southeast of Martha’s Vineyard, said Lt. Junior Grade Jon Rose.
Crew members Wayne Ingham and Michael Leonardo, both of Fairhaven, were missing, the Coast Guard said. The pair sometimes fish with a third man, but it was not immediately clear who he is or if he was on the boat, the Coast Guard said.
The 37-foot boat was discovered after the swordfishing vessel Tenacious passed it at about 7 p.m., then turned around after spotting smoke. The crew found the capsized hull of the boat.
Rose said cutters in the area were still seeking survivors.
“We’re always optimistic until we’ve exhausted all the possibilities,” he said.
The Coast Guard searched for survivors through the night and into Saturday morning, officials said.
