LEWISTON – A man died Sunday night after he was stabbed in a second-floor Knox Street apartment, Lewiston police said.

The name of the deceased was not being released pending notification of next of kin, said Lewiston Police Lt. Michael McGonagle. As of 11:15 p.m. Sunday, no arrests had been made. He would not comment on whether there any suspects. “It’s under investigation,” McGonagle said.

Police said only that they got a call of a disturbance at 52 Knox St. at 9:33 p.m. “Upon arrival we found a man who had been stabbed in the chest. Shortly after, the subject died,” McGonagle said.

He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police were not sure whether the man who had been killed lived at the apartment where he died. More information will be released today, McGonagle said.

Before 10 p.m. Sunday, ambulances, firetrucks and police cars with sirens blaring screamed to Knox Street and stopped in front of the apartment building. Five police cars were parked in the street, which was blocked off to traffic. One ambulance was in the driveway, a second on the street. Firetrucks stood nearby.

After several minutes, police told a crowd to back up as a stretcher was brought to the ambulance. Medics could be seen inside the ambulance administering CPR.

Neighbors and onlookers gathered in the street and sidewalks to see what they could. Before the ambulance left, rumors had spread that a man was stabbed and had died. Neighbors were shaken, and said the stabbing was “scary.”

“I saw a woman come running out screaming: He’s dead, he’s dead,'” said Craig Thibodeau, 19, of Birch Street. He said he did not know the woman. A friend of his used to live in the building. “I don’t feel safe,” Thibodeau said.

One woman who declined to give her name said she is a neighbor of the man who was stabbed and his girlfriend. “They’re both 32. She has six kids. My kids go to school with their kids,” she said. “They argued a lot. They were always fighting.”

The neighbor said she overheard the girlfriend saying, “Can they bring him back to life?” At that point police and medical workers had been in an upstairs apartment a while before taking the victim to the ambulance. “It doesn’t look good,” she said. She and other neighbors complained of violence, such as fighting, in the area lately. “It’s Iraq here,” she complained. “I’m getting out of here. I’m moving to Auburn.”

Catherine Martin of 37 Knox St. said she came over after hearing on her police scanner there was a report of a stabbing.

“A lot’s been going on here in the area,” she said standing on the sidewalk in the night. “I’ve lived here for 23 years.” A lot of trouble is from people who did not grow up in Lewiston, and who recently moved to Knox Street, she said. “They give us a bad name. I don’t think it’s right. It ticks me off.”

“It’s scary,” agreed her friend and neighbor, Geraldine Chartrand, who lives nearby. “I don’t feel safe,” Chartrand said. “I’ve lived on Park Street for over 15 years. Crime is getting worse.”
