LEWISTON – A 20-year-old man was checked for injuries Monday after his ATV struck and killed a deer on a riding trail off Cotton Road, Sgt. Danny LaChance said.

He said the rider, Michael Belanger of Lewiston, complained of back pains and was brought to St. Mary’s Regional Hospital. The accident occurred at 5:58 p.m. The ATV was damaged, but not a complete loss.

LaChance said it’s not unusual to see deer near the trail – it’s by a cornfield – but it is unusual to hit and kill one. Belanger got to keep the deer for his trouble. A game warden tagged the animal and said it was all his, according to LaChance.
