PORTLAND – The Maine Wood Carvers Association will sponsor the 18th annual Downeast Wood Carving and Wildlife Art Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Catherine McAuley High School, 631 Stevens Ave. The public is invited.
The show will feature artistry from all over New England, eastern states and Canada. Carvings will range from working decoys to songbirds, loons, shore and game birds. Mammals, fish, flowers, Santa, walking sticks and caricatures will also be on display along with paintings in various media and photography, all in the wildlife theme.
Artwork entered will be judged, with ribbons and prizes awarded. All competitors are grouped and judged according to experience and ability, from master to novice. There is also a youth category. The public may vote for their favorites. More than 100 carvers will compete, and many artists and exhibitors will offer their art for sale.
Artists will demonstrate. Carving/artist supplies, tools and special woods for carving will be available, as will small carving project kits for those who want to try their hand. Soap carving classes will be offered to children at no cost. There will be a raffle of work created for the show. Door prizes will be awarded and free T-shirts for children will be given while the supply lasts.
There is free parking. Food and beverages will be available.
