BETHEL – Marty Engstrom of Fryeburg will be the featured speaker at the 39th annual meeting of the Bethel Historical Society on Thursday, Sept. 9, on the grounds of the society’s Regional History Center.

The session will begin with a 6:30 p.m. chicken barbecue followed by a 7:30 meeting and presentation by Engstrom on “A Winter Trip on Mt. Washington.”

Engstrom is perhaps best known for his memorable smile at the end of his report on the weather at the top of Mt. Washington. He, however, was never really in the weather business, but served as a television engineer at the summit of Mt. Washington from 1964 to 2002. Prior to 1964, he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he obtained electronic training.

His slide presentation will provide the details of trips up Mt. Washington with various scenes around and inside the buildings in winter and summer. Since his retirement, “Mountain Marty” is active on his 15-acre farm where he lives with his wife, Rosalie, two of his three grown children and two grandsons. When he is not struggling with his farm work, he “tinkers” with all technical subjects and serves as a pilot and amateur radio operator.

The meeting will include announcements, reports and presentation of the annual Marjorie MacArthur Noll Volunteer Service Award. Officers and trustees for the coming year will be elected.

Those attending the barbecue are asked to bring either a salad or dessert.
