LEWISTON – The Lewiston School Committee has appointed Betty Gundersdorf as director of Lewiston Adult Education. Gundersdorf succeeds Anne Niemiec, who retired in June.

Gundersdorf most recently served as assistant director of the program for the past 19 years and prior to that as an Adult Basic Education counselor for two years.

She is committed to the needs of the adult learner and the needs of the community. She has been a collaborator bringing people and institutions together. Some of her collaborative efforts include Moms Plus, the Lewiston Auburn Community Education Coalition and Lewiston Even Start Family Literacy Program.

Gundersdorf is a proponent of education in the workplace, cooperating with companies and organizations such as Falcon Shoe, Bates College and Central Maine Medical Center to organize and provide on-site learning.

She has also exercised statewide leadership, most recently heading up the Workplace Education objective of the Maine Adult Education Action Agenda and the Voter Registration Education Action Project.

Gundersdorf said, “I am excited to have this opportunity to build upon the strengths of this award winning program. I look forward to greater inter-agency collaboration designed to meet the learning needs of our community.”
