LEWISTON – An autopsy conducted Tuesday confirmed what police had suspected from the start: Jamilah Shabazz died of a single stab wound to the chest.

No arrests were made in the death of the 32-year-old, who was stabbed Sunday night inside an apartment at 56 Knox St.

Investigators said no legal action in the case is expected this week as police continue to gather evidence to present to the attorney general’s office.

“Detectives are still investigating, interviewing and analyzing,” said Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland. “I expect that will continue for a number of days, until we know what went on inside that apartment.”

Shabazz, originally from the Bronx, N.Y., was living at the Knox Street tenement with 31-year-old Tarina Botelho and her six children. He had been staying off-and-on at the Motel 6 on Pleasant Street, according to court records.

Some neighbors said Shabazz and Botelho frequently argued inside and outside the apartment house on Knox Street. When police responded there about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, it was after receiving a complaint of a fight at the home.

Shabazz has a history of domestic assault in Lewiston, according to court records. Last November, he was arrested on two counts of criminal threatening and a charge of aggravated assault.

The victim in that case was a woman who reported Shabazz had threatened and attacked her at Motel 6, according to the court records. In the indictment, Shabazz was accused of causing “serious bodily injury” to the woman and of placing her in fear for her life.

At the time, Shabazz listed an address at 137 College St.

The case against Shabazz was transferred to Androscoggin County Superior Court. Earlier this year, Shabazz pleaded guilty to two counts of violating bail in a plea arrangement.

Botelho also has a criminal history in Lewiston. According to court records, she has been convicted of terrorizing, assault, disorderly conduct and negotiating a worthless instrument.

In May, she was involved in a fight with another woman while police and drug agents were raiding an apartment across the street. She was charged with disorderly conduct.

Botelho was most recently convicted in August, on charges of disorderly conduct and violating conditions of release. Those charges stemmed from another disturbance on Knox Street in June, according to court records. Botelho served three days in jail for each charge.

Police say Botelho has been cooperating with investigators since the death of Shabazz. Detectives are still speaking with neighbors and friends in an attempt to learn more about the couple.

Botelho’s children are between the ages of 6 and 13 years old, police said. It was believed two of the children may have witnessed the stabbing. Investigators have talked with some of the children. All of the children have been staying with relatives since the stabbing.
