BURLINGTON, Colo. (AP) – A pickup truck allegedly stolen in Colorado by a fugitive from Maine was abandoned in western Kansas, where another vehicle was taken, the Colorado State Patrol said Wednesday

Jason Belmer, 25, of Corinna, Maine, is wanted on drug charges in connection with the seizure of nearly eight pounds of cocaine, which authorities found buried in his grandmother’s yard in Corinna.

He was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by a state patrolman for speeding on Saturday on Interstate 70 near Burlington, about 140 miles east of Denver near the Kansas state line, Master Trooper Ron Watkins said.

Belmer gave a false name and then tried to assault the trooper and take his gun before fleeing into a cornfield, Watkins said.

The driver, Michelle Carmack of Corinna, was arrested.

Authorities believe Belmer stole a flatbed pickup from a farm near Burlington on Sunday. That truck was found in St. Frances, Kan., about 60 miles east of Burlington.

Watkins had no description of the second stolen vehicle, but said it was believed to have two handguns and ammunition in it.
