I am writing this letter in support of the new Lake Street School on Park Avenue in Auburn.

I have two children ages 9 and 6. We moved into our home on Dexter Avenue about eight years ago. The main reason we chose the Lake Street School area to live was because of the reputation of the school.

I would like to urge the citizens of Auburn to vote on the referendum being held at Auburn City Hall behind the library on Sept. 14. The new school will help relieve overcrowding in the other elementary schools in Auburn and improve the school facilities. The children currently attending Lake Street School have no gymnasium and must be bused to Webster for gym class. They also have no cafeteria, which means they eat lunch at their desk. The school is over 75 years old and is not handicapped accessible.

The state of Maine will pay for 84 percent of the costs of the new school, approximately $8.1 million. The remaining 16 percent is local share; this does not mean property tax increases because debt payments currently being made for previous school projects will be retired just as the new debt service payments will begin.

The construction of this school is part of the adopted comprehensive plan to improve all schools in Auburn. Please vote on Sept. 14, the children in Auburn deserve this school.
