DURHAM – Lena Marstaller, 105, of Aunt Hill Lane, Durham died at her residence Wednesday, Sept. 8.
She was born in Reedville, Texas, on Feb. 1, 1899, the daughter of Wilhelm and Emma (Heidenreich) Marstaller. After graduating from high school, she went on to graduate from Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1924.
For many years she worked as a nursing companion and for 20 years she and her sister, Louisa ran a nursing home on the Eastern Promenade in Portland. She was a member of the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church. She traveled extensively, having gone to India several times to visit with her sister, Esther, and to Columbia to visit with her sister, Elizabeth who were both doing missionary work.
Although she was legally blind she didn’t let that keep her idle. She still went to Fennimore’s farm in Bowdoin and picked strawberries. She also enjoyed gardening and flowers.
She is survived by her two sisters, Elizabeth Marstaller and Ruth Marstaller Taylor, both of Durham; and many nieces and nephews and their children.
She was predeceased by brothers, August, Charles, David, and Barnabas; and sisters, Martha, Anna, Louisa, Lydia, and Esther.
