NEW YORK – Gary Sheffield and Tony Clark each drove in two runs during a seven-run second inning, and the New York Yankees completed a doubleheader sweep of the sinking Tampa Bay Devil Rays with a 10-5 victory Thursday night.

Mike Mussina threw eight sharp innings in a 9-1 victory in the opener, which started with just a few hundred fans in the stands. Yankee Stadium filled up a bit more for the nightcap, with the paid attendance announced as 41,230.

The teams played two games because Wednesday’s doubleheader was rained out. The first game Wednesday was supposed to be a makeup of Monday’s doubleheader that was changed to a single night game when the Devil Rays were unable to get to New York in time for Game 1 due to Hurricane Frances.

Royals. Tigers split

DETROIT – The Kansas City Royals set a team record for runs in a doubleheader Thursday. Unfortunately for them, they did it all in the first game.

The Royals set numerous records in a 26-5 first-game rout of the Detroit Tigers, but had no offense left in an 8-0 loss in Game 2. Joe Randa led the Royals in the first game, going 6-for-7 and tying a major league record by scoring six times. He had five singles and a double, but he wasn’t in the starting lineup for the second game.

White Sox 7, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas – Mark Buehrle pitched a three-hitter for his second complete game of the season, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 7-3 victory over the slumping Texas Rangers.

Pirates, Astros split

PITTSBURGH – Jeff Bagwell, Brad Ausmus and Lance Berkman drove in two runs each and the Houston Astros shook off Pirates starter Oliver Perez’s dominance in the opener, beating Pittsburgh 9-2 for their 13th victory in 14 games and a doubleheader split.

In the first game, Perez ended the Astros’ 12-game winning streak with the most dominating start of his short career, striking out 14 in a 3-1 victory – the Astros’ only loss since Aug. 26.

Brewers 7, Reds 2

CINCINNATI – Wes Helms hit a grand slam and Brady Clark had four hits against his former team, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the Cincinnati Reds 7-2.

Phillies 9, Braves 4

ATLANTA – The Philadelphia Phillies overcame a blown lead and a bizarre home run, beating the Atlanta Braves 9-4 with Jim Thome’s two-run double and another stellar performance by the bullpen.
