LEWISTON – You can bet Lewiston football coach Bill County doesn’t want to spend another Friday evening watching his Blue Devils come apart at the seams.

For County, Noble’s 28-6 victory over Lewiston at Don Roux Field was ugly enough for him to contemplate personnel changes over the next few days.

Lewiston’s offense, which never caught a glimpse of the end zone, produced a total of 30 yards in rushing and was credited with one first down the entire game. On the other hand, the Knights’ offense had no problem accumulating 142 yards in rushing and tacked on another 105 through the air.

The Blue Devils’ dismal showing on offense was simply unacceptable to County, who gave the team’s defense a big pat the back since it spent most of the game on the field.

“There is no excuse with the way we played,” said County. “We didn’t play well and that’s not O.K. We played decently on defense until we got down in the second half.”

Despite Noble’s domination in the first quarter, the Blue Devils got on the board first thanks to their defense.

Senior Jeff Briggs came out of nowhere and snatched a pass by Noble sophomore quarterback Josh Gagnon and ran it back 75 yards for a touchdown with 1:48 left in the opening quarter. The rush failed.

But the Blue Devils’ lead quickly became a thing of the past when the Knights punched in a pair of touchdowns in the second stanza.

Noble began the ensuing drive on the 45 and drove to the Lewiston 33. Gagnon, who completed six passes in 11 attempts, went to the air and connected with Kirby Phillips for a 15-yard reception. The Blue Devils were penalized five yards before Nate Bryant fought his way in for a touchdown. Trevor Hodsdon, who went 4-for-4 on the night, split the uprights for the extra point to give Noble a 7-6 lead.

“We can run the ball off tackle as you can see,” said Noble coach Brendan Scully. “We were nervous coming here. They play tough and physical. This is a tough place to play in.

“We still let them get on the scoreboard. That was our fault.”

Bryant caught a 9-yard TD pass from Gagnon to make it 14-6 at the half.

In the second half, Noble bided its time before scoring late in the third quarter. From the 48, Gagnon threw a 34-yard pass to Jamie Fradsham to place the Knights at the 14. Noble pushed and shoved its way to the 5, before James Best scored.

Best hit paydirt again with 6:21 left in the game, scoring on a 30-yard rush as he shook off a host of Lewiston defenders.
