SANFORD – Edward Little coach Jim Hersom was worried that three days may not be enough time to prepare for Sanford’s triple-option offense.

His line proved him wrong.

Paced by 219 combined yards and three touchdowns from Jon Demers and Robie Leighton, and a stifling defense that allowed just 122 rushing yards, the Red Eddies marched over the Redskins 25-13 at Cobb Stadium on Friday.

“The line played great out there,” said Hersom. “I was a little worried that we wouldn’t be prepared enough for their option offense. We asked the line to win us the game, and they did.”

On offense, the line opened up hole after hole for Demers and Leighton. In the first half, Leighton rushed for 74 yards on 13 carries, while Demers stood out in the second half, picking up 84 yards on 12 carries.

“The line, they did the job tonight,” said Demers. “It was all them, really.”

“We run different styles,” said Leighton. “It’s good to have two styles to confuse the defense a little.”

Just for good measure, fullback Garner Lavalley managed 43 yards on nine carries.

Edward Little (1-1) took control of the game early on the defensive side of the ball, not allowing the Redskins (0-2) to cross midfield until there were less than five minutes remaining in the first half.

In the first quarter, the Eddies used a balanced running game to eat more than eight minutes off the clock and score the game’s first points, a 2-yard plunge by Demers.

“I got the ball and was in a little trouble,” said Demers, “but the line opened up a hole and I shot right through.”

The Redskins fumbled the ball on the first play of their first drive and Edward Little recovered, turning good fortune into points with another solid drive, this time culminating in a Leighton 4-yard scamper and a 13-0 lead.

After gaining their initial first down of the game, Sanford again botched a special teams’ play, this time when punter Tyler Hanson knelt with the ball while trying to scoop it up a low snap. Two possessions and a defensive stop later, EL quarterback Steve Simpson curled in on a bootleg to the right to put the Eddies ahead 19-0.

“We don’t have the kind of team where we can make those mistakes and win,” said Sanford coach Mike Fallon. “Those special teams mistakes really hurt us.”

Sanford’s only points of the first half came on a circus-style catch by Alan Chenard on a ball tipped twice by the EL secondary after a Hail Mary pass from Derek Legere.

EL outgained Sanford 175-95 in the first half, including 156 to 52 on the ground.

Sanford appeared to gain the momentum in the third quarter after a six-minute opening drive resulted in a Derek Legere touchdown run.

Edward Little countered, though, taking advantage of yet another Sanford turnover midway through the quarter and marched for its final touchdown, another run by Leighton.

The teams played a scoreless fourth quarter, trading punts twice.
