Auburn residents need to mark Tuesday, Sept. 14, on their calendars. That is the day we can and should vote for the new elementary school building on Park Avenue. It should be noted that voting will be held only at the City Building for this special election.

This is a school that needs to be built for multiple reasons. Auburn has adopted a comprehensive plan to improve all of its schools and has done so in other areas of town already. Even though my family has loved Lake Street School, the fact remains that it is just too old, too small and too inaccessible for today’s student population. The new school could eventually replace Webster School, another very old building in a crowded part of town.

The timing is right for this improvement. Because of retiring debt and an 84 percent contribution by the state, there will be no need to raise property taxes to pay for this school.

Auburn is in the midst of great development and what better to way promote growth than with a quality new school reflecting the city’s commitment to its citizens?
