DURHAM – Two men escaped with apparent minor injuries Sunday night when a car struck a utility pole on Route 136 after the driver fell asleep.

Anthony J. Caiazzo, 17, of Gray, was driving south on Route 136 about a half-mile from the Freeport line when he fell asleep, according to the investigating officer, Sgt. James Jacques of the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department. The car drifted off the right shoulder, struck and snapped a Central Maine Power Co. pole, then continued about 500 feet, striking two mailbox posts before coming to a stop. The passenger, Jerome I. Holliman, 18, of Freeport, was also asleep at the time of the accident.

Both received minor injuries, Jacques said. They were taken by Durham Fire and Rescue to Parkview Hospital in Brunswick for examination.

Caiazzo’s 2001 Volkswagen Jetta was demolished, with damages estimated at $15,000. Damage to the utility pole was set at $3,000 in the 6:30 p.m. mishap.
