RUMFORD – A Dixfield woman suffered a broken leg Monday night after being struck by a car at the Hosmer Field complex.
Elisa Knapp, 46, suffered a broken bone in her lower leg and was taken to Rumford Hospital by Med-Care Ambulance after the 9:18 p.m. incident, Patrolman Dan Garbarini said.
The incident happened when Debra Hanmer, 45, of Dixfield was attempting to back her Plymouth Breeze out of a parking area at the bottom of Strafford Avenue, he said.
“According to witnesses, the driver was not all that sure of herself. She may have thought that someone was behind her, but it’s unclear if she got nervous and reacted without thinking,” he said.
Instead of backing the car out, Garbarini said Hanmer put it in drive and accelerated forward at a high rate of speed.
Knapp, who was walking by in front of Hanmer at that moment, was struck and pinned against a fence for about 30 seconds, according to witnesses, Garbarini said.
No charges are expected to be filed.
