ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Vladimir Guerrero left the Anaheim Angels’ game against Seattle in the first inning Monday night after being hit in the left side of his head by a pitch from Mariners starter Ryan Franklin.

Franklin’s 0-2 delivery drilled Guerrero, who went down in a heap and lay sprawled at the plate for a few minutes. The right fielder moved his arm and talked to those standing over him before walking off the field with the help of the Anaheim staff.

Guerrero never lost consciousness, and was taken to the hospital for precautionary X-rays after being examined in the clubhouse.

The game was delayed for more than five minutes while Seattle manager Bob Melvin and Angels manager Mike Scioscia talked to the umpires.

The situation escalated when Scioscia yelled and gestured toward Franklin from near the Anaheim dugout. Scioscia was ejected for the fourth time this season.

Franklin pointed at himself and started to walk toward Scioscia, but was restrained by teammates. The Mariners bench emptied onto the field, but no punches were exchanged.

Plate umpire Wally Bell issued warnings to both teams.

Angels starter John Lackey hit Seattle left fielder Randy Winn on the outside right knee in the third inning, but was not ejected despite Melvin’s animated discussion with Bell.

Curtis Pride was inserted as a pinch-runner for Guerrero and remained in the game in left field. Jose Guillen replaced Guerrero in right.
