SEAFORD, N.Y. (AP) – John F. Kennedy Jr.’s first airplane, a 1977 Cessna Skylane, will be offered for sale by Internet auctioneer Lelands.com, the company announced Monday.
The three-bladed propeller plane, painted red, white and blue and registered N529JK in honor of his father’s May 29 birthday, will carry a reserve price of $180,000, Lelands said.
Bidding will begin online Nov. 10 and will conclude Dec. 2.
Kennedy, editor of George magazine and son of the late President John F. Kennedy, bought the plane in 1998 and sold it in May 1999 after buying the ill-fated Piper Saratoga that crashed off Martha’s Vineyard on July 17, 1999, killing him, his wife and his sister-in-law.
The plane’s owner, who wants to remain anonymous, originally put it up for sale through another auction house in 2000 but did not find a buyer.
The company that handled the 2000 auction, Fisher Auction Co., of Pompano Beach, Fla., said at the time that the plane had been used by Kennedy for training and cross-country flights.
The plane, which is being kept in a hangar in New Jersey, is in “great condition” and has undergone upgrades since it was flown by Kennedy, Lelands.com president Michael Heffner said.
“It is in perfect working order,” Heffner said.
The plane’s log books and maps are being auctioned separately, he said.
