PARIS – A Paris police officer escaped injury when his cruiser crashed off Oxford Street late Saturday afternoon as he responded to a call. The car was demolished.

Part-time Patrolman Anthony Keach, 22, of West Paris, was on his way to assist a Norway police officer when the accident happened, Oxford police Sgt. Theron Bickford said. The cruiser lights and siren were on, he said.

Keach rounded one of the S-curves near the Kilgore ball field and came upon two vehicles also traveling east ahead of him, the investigator said. The first one in the line, a van driven by Gertrude Atkinson, pulled to the right to give the cruiser the right of way, while the second one in line, a sedan driven by Joseph Silvestri, pulled to the left to go around Atkinson’s van, Bickford said.

Keach tried to avoid Silvestri’s car by veering left, but he hit the soft shoulder and spun backward into a large pine tree, the sergeant said.

Neither Atkinson nor Silvestri was hurt, he said. The ages and addresses of the two drivers were not available Monday night. No charges were filed, Bickford said.

The 2004 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser sustained $10,000 damage and was declared a total loss, Bickford said.

Norway police Officer Shane White, Paris Fire Department and PACE ambulance service assisted Bickford.
