POLAND – Even the best visiting scores of the year couldn’t derail the machine that is the Poland High School golf team at their home course.

Three golfers carded 38s on Tuesday and three others shot 41 as the Knights rolled over Lake Region 10-2 at Poland Spring Country Club.

In the season-opening match for both teams, Poland eked out a 7-6 win at Lake Region’s home course, and in that match they had fallen behind early with losses at No. 1 (Keegan Fennessy) and No. 2 (Halsey Copp).

“It’s not like we had a loss to avenge, really,” said Fennessy. “But revenge was certainly on our minds, knowing it had been so close last time.”

“Honestly, I don’t know that we should have won that last one,” said Poland coach Dan Novak. “This one, though, all of them played well. I am very pleasantly surprised at this outcome.”

On Tuesday, both Fennessy and Copp took two points from their opponents.

“Last time we had a little bit of a heartbreak, because we all blew it on the last couple of holes,” said Copp. “I was a little more patient this time, took less club off the tees and really paid attention. We knew coming in this was going to be one of the toughest matches of the season.”

The fact that the two schools have been friendly rivals for a few years also has helped the teams along.

“This has to be my favorite match of the year,” said Copp. “We all know each other and just have a good time out there.”

The win is the 18th consecutive regular-season match win for the Knights, dating back to their final two matches of the 2002 season.

After Fennessy and Copp both came in with two points, Jason Lehr posted 1 points in his match win over Craig Barter, while Devin Conway and Matt Cloutier won easily at Nos. 5 and 6.

The lone blemish on the scorecard for Poland was a lake Region win at No. 3, where Ian Biggers upended Dylan Michaud 40-41, and 2-up in match play. The 40 by Biggers is lowest opponent’s score of the season at Poland Spring.

Poland plays its next match against St. Dom’s on Thursday.
