AUBURN – A. Freeman “Freem” Berry, 89, of Lake Shore Drive, Auburn, son of Bertrand and Alice (Doe) Berry, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side, on Sept. 26.
He was born in Auburn on May 30, 1915, and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1934.
In his younger years, Freem loved skiing and ski jumping at Pettingill Park near his home. He competed in ski jumping in Maine and throughout New England.
Freem worked most of his career as a shoe last designer, both in Auburn, and Salem, Mass.
Later in life, he developed a great interest in wood-working and wood-carving and created many toys and home accessories for his family.
His retirement years were spent enjoying the woods, animals, and birds from Moosehead Lake to Casco Bay. He shared many summers with his family and friends at his camp at Torsey Lake in Readfield.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Elaine (Lach) Berry; his daughters, Lois-Jean Berry, of Plainville, Conn. and Boothbay Harbor, and Elizabeth Reed, of Boothbay Harbor. He was also loved by three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Freeman was predeceased by his brothers, Leon, Everett, and James; his sister, Dorothy Kesaris; and his sister-in-law, Mary Lach.
He will be greatly missed.
