PARIS – Harry Zachary Swan Jr., 74, of Countryside Trailer Park in Paris, died Sept. 26, at his home after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born March 18, 1930, at Locke Mills village in Greenwood, he was the son of Harry Zachary Swan Sr. and Marion L. Swan of Locke Mills.

He attended the Locke Mills Elementary School and graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, Class of 1948.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948 and went to Fort Myers, Va., for basic training. He was transferred to Fort L.J. McNair in Washington, D.C. where he trained troops and guarded special facilities. He was honorably discharged in 1952 as a sergeant first class.

He worked at Boise Cascade paper mill in Rumford for a short time, then at the newly expanded E.L. Tebbets Spool Co. in Locke Mills for 42 years, retiring in March 1995 from purchasing, shipping and receiving.

He married Margery Rowe Swan, of Bethel, on May 30, 1953, and they made their home in Locke Mills until moving to Paris in 1997.

He was active with the SAD 44 board and management of Bethel and was a member of the Greenwood Planning Board and Board of Selectmen.

He was active in the Locke Mills Union Church and was a member of the Oxford Advent Christian Church in Oxford. He was also a member of the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post No. 68 of Locke Mills for 53 years, serving as commander for a year and head of the firing squad for many years and receiving honors for his service.

He and his wife were charter members of the Good Sam Fireside Friends Chapter 28 of Paris, enjoying many camping trips and making many friends.

His interests included “tinkering” motorcycles, camping and family.

Surviving include his wife of 51 years, Margery, of Paris; three sons, Pastor Bruce Swan, and his wife, Debra, of Springfield; Jeffrey Swan, of Rumford, and Todd Swan, of Albany Township; two sisters, Barbara Wakefield, and husband, Ken, of Locke Mills, and Madelyn Murphy, and husband, Walt, of Decatur, Mich.; two grandsons; five granddaughters; his mother-in-law, Edith Rowe, of Norway; and two special aunts, Alice Twitchell, of Oxford, and Jannette Pratt, of Brandon, Fla. He will also be missed by cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends.
