The biggest win of the season for the Oak Hill football team will remain as such. In fact, it was never really in doubt.

Oak Hill upset Leavitt, 10-7, in overtime Saturday night on a 20-yard field goal by Gary Goodheart.

Controversy erupted following the dramatic ending when the Oak Hill head coach ran on the field to celebrate the win with his team, leading the Leavitt coaching staff to call for a forfeit.

Bruce Nicholas had been suspended for one game after he had been ejected from the previous week’s game against Brewer when his team received two bench penalties.

By Maine Principals’ Association rule, a coach who is ejected from a game must sit out the team’s next countable game and is not allowed at the game site before, during or after the game.

The MPA ejection rule reads: “A suspended coach may not be present at the game site. Not being physically present at the site means the disqualified coach is not to be present in the locker room, on the sidelines, in the stands, or site area before, during or after the game/meet.”

The rule, however, does not recommend any penalties if it is violated.

MPA assistant executive director Larry LaBrie said that while Nicholas should not have been at the game site, Oak Hill will not have to forfeit the game.

LaBrie said it didn’t make sense to take away a victory the players had earned on the field because of a mistake made by a coach that had no impact on the game.

“There’s no forfeiture involved,” said LaBrie. “The kids won the game fair and square. (The game) was over and done.”

“I think the MPA showed good judgment because whatever was happening after the game didn’t have anything to do with the result of the game,” said Oak Hill athletic director Bill Fairchild.

Nicholas did not return a call seeking comment Monday night.

Leavitt head coach Mike Hathaway said he received assurances from Fairchild that Nicholas did not have any contact with the team before or during the game and that the coach’s presence did not have any impact on the game.

“I’m fine with (the MPA’s decision). I don’t really want to go out and win games that way,” he said. “I just thought it was pretty disrespectful.”

Both teams are now 2-2 in Class B East. Both teams are home next week. Leavitt hosts Winslow, while Oak Hill meets Fryeburg.
