PORTLAND – Glennis E. Gardner, 76, of Gorham, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Maine Medical Center, Portland.
She was born April 13, 1928, in Stratton, the daughter of Hilliard and Alice Hanson Townsend.
She worked at the Stratton Drug Store after high school, where she met her husband, Glazer Gardner. They were married Nov. 1, 1947.
Glennis devoted most of her earlier years to her three sons. She was an accomplished singer and guitarist, and spent many nights around the campfire singing and playing. She even managed to pay for the family’s seasonal campsites by entertaining other campers. She never learned to drive, but always got to where she wanted to go.
When her boys were grown, Glennis ran her own business, baking wedding cakes and preparing other baked goods. She sold many of the baked goods at local convenience stores.
When she gave up baking, she and Glazer bought and sold glassware at flea markets up and down the coast. She later wrote and self-published a cookbook entitled “Sweet Delights,” which she sold and gave away to friends and family.
Over the years, Glennis and her husband lived in Pittsfield, Gardiner, Augusta, Monmouth and Randolph.
She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Gardner and his wife, Barbara, of Buxton, Doug Gardner and his wife, Joanne, of Windsor, and Ted Gardner and his wife, Linda, of Chelsea; a sister, Gladys Brackley and her husband, Cecil, of Livermore Falls; six grandchildren, Shannon Gardner, of Seattle, Wash., Amy DeRapps of Virginia Beach, Va., Corey Gardner of Chelsea, Stephanie Gardner of Waterville Valley, N.H., Andrea Gardner of Seattle, Wash., and Kathy Gardner of Buxton; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Colby DeRapps; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband in October of 2003; her brother, Stanley; and her sisters, Marguerite, Stella and Hazel.
