GREENE – The fourth annual Greene Village Celebration was held on Sept. 11. Folks gathered early to kick off the day at the VFW for a blueberry pancake breakfast put on by the Boy Scout Troop 113.
The parade got under way at 9:30 after veterans from VFW Post 11032 raised the flags and Cindy Morin sang the National Anthem. Pat Stevens organized the parade, which traveled up Main Street and greeted residents along the way to the Recreation Drive.
Grand marshals were Bobby Goyette, who rode in a 1923 Ford Roadster, and Clyde Libby, who rode in Greene’s new firetruck.
Some of the entries were Bill’s Auto Transport’s 18-wheeler; new and antique cars; old engines; Greene fire trucks; Turner Rescue; Kora Krazy Kops; Shrine mini-cars; Leavitt Area High School Band, Color Guard and football team; State Police; Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department; Northeast Rottweiler Rescue; Little Dreamers Daycare kids; Air Force SUV unit; many veterans and heroes; horses; Fellowship Church; ATV club; and an Androscoggin Grange float adorned with farm animals.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Officer Landry Leadership Course was held after the parade. The ropes course is dedicated to State Trooper Gil Landry, who died in the line of duty. The course is a joint effort between the Maine State Police and SAD 52.
The afternoon included karate demonstrations by Pelletier’s Karate, Bangor fiddlers, a pie contest, frog-jumping contest, kids’ cookie contest, Mr. Legs Contest, LEA Brass Trio performance and New Life Singers concert.
There was a chicken barbecue and other food during the day and a VFW baked bean supper to conclude the event.
Next year’s celebration plans will begin in January so anyone who wants to be included should call 946-5146.
