BETHEL – Liz Rosenberg definitely has a flair for the dramatic.

The junior halfback drove home a one-timer with 13 seconds left in double overtime as the Telstar Rebels shook off Hall-Dale with a 2-1 victory in a Mountain Valley Conference field hockey game Wednesday afternoon.

Class C Telstar (8-1-1), No.1 in latest Heal Points, was on fire and was awarded a penalty corner.

Mallory Brown fed the ball in toward Rosenberg who was squarely positioned on the left side of the circle. Rosenberg sent a shot in that got past Hall-Dale goalie Hibby Regan and trickled in the right side of the cage.

“I just knew that I needed to get the shot off,” Rosenberg said. “The time was running down, but I knew even if time ran out, we’d still play off a penalty corner. So I knew we had to keep the ball in the circle, and Mallory had fed in a nice pass.”

Telstar enjoyed a huge territorial advantage throughout the game, holding a 26-4 and 17-2 advantages in shots and penalty corners. Rebel midfielders Megan Bailey, Jillian Kimball and Dana Wilson controlled the ball. Hall-Dale (4-6) mounted one offensive drive, but Rebel goalie Stephanie Tripp stepped out to save a shot by Katie Bell.

The play sparked the Rebels, who proceeded to advance the ball into their offensive zone.

“Our strategy in overtime was ball control,” Rosenberg said. “We needed to keep the ball on our sticks and use our speed.”

Telstar tied it at 1-1 on a goal by freshman Bailey Davis who flooded the zone. Rosenberg assisted on the play, with 13:29 left in regulation.

The Rebels were energized, and Kayla Mills carried play down the right wing. Jessie Farrington and Wilson each hit the post with shots.

“If they don’t start scoring, those shots will come back to haunt them,” Telstar coach Gail Wight said. “At halftime, we adjusted by making a point to go after the ball instead of waiting and then reacting. That save by Stephanie really got them going.”

Hal-Dale drew first blood when Torrie Levesque scored on a breakaway with 19:38 left in the first half.
