OAKLAND, Calif. – The Anaheim Angels capped a stirring comeback with one final rally, and now they’re champions of the AL West for the first time in 18 years.

Chasing Oakland and Texas for most of the season, the Angels scored three times in the eighth inning to beat the Athletics 5-4 Saturday and clinch the division title.

Darin Erstad hit a tying, two-run double and scored on Garret Anderson’s single as the Angels earned their first playoff berth since 2002, when they won the World Series as the wild-card team.

Vladimir Guerrero homered for the Angels, who trailed Oakland by two games last Monday. But after beating the A’s 10-0 Friday night, Anaheim won again to wrap it up going into Sunday’s season finale.

Twins-Indians suspended

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians were tied at 5-all after 11 innings Saturday when the game was suspended because the Metrodome field needed to be changed over for the later Penn State-Minnesota football game.

The Twins and Indians will resume at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, followed by the regularly scheduled season finale between the two teams.

Braves 8, Cubs 6

CHICAGO – Now make it 59 years without a World Series appearance by the Chicago Cubs.

A season that started with such high hopes for the Cubs wound up with them being eliminated from playoff contention by their fifth straight loss, 8-6 to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.

Dodgers 7, Giants 3

LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers are finally back in the playoffs.

Steve Finley’s grand slam capped a seven-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning and Los Angeles won the NL West, beating the San Francisco Giants 7-3 Saturday.

The Dodgers reached the postseason for the first time since making it as the wild card in 1996. They won the division the year before – now, they’ll look to win their first postseason game since upsetting Oakland in the 1988 World Series.

Astros 9, Rockies 3

HOUSTON – The Houston Astros are one win from completing an amazing late-season playoff push.

Roy Oswalt became the NL’s first 20-game winner, and Jeff Kent and Craig Biggio each homered twice, giving the Astros the NL wild-card lead with a 9-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

The Astros moved a game ahead of the San Francisco Giants, who lost 7-3 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Chicago Cubs were eliminated from the postseason race after losing their fifth straight, 8-6 to Atlanta.

With a victory in the regular-season finale Sunday or a Giants loss, Houston will clinch the NL’s final playoff spot – an improbable thought almost a month ago.

when it was four games below .500 and seven games behind the Cubs.
