SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Jason Casey threw two touchdown passes as Tufts beat Bates 14-12 on Saturday.
After a scoreless first quarter, Tufts (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) capitalized on a Bates fumble to take a 7-0 lead as Casey connected with Brian VonAncken two plays later for a 31-yard score. Tufts capped a 53-yard, nine-play drive with Kevin Holland scoring on a 20-yard pass, making it 14-0 at halftime.
Bates (0-2, 0-2) cut the margin to 14-6 early in the fourth quarter, as Eric Obeng ran in a touchdown from the 1-yard line. Bates gained possession at their own 25 and marched 75 yards for another touchdown by Obeng. The win was Tufts’ 19th in a row against Bates dating back to 1985.
Amherst 34, Bowdoin 28
BRUNSWICK- In a game that featured 972 yards of total offense and a handful of school records broken for each squad, the Amherst College football team held off a late charge from Bowdoin and took a 34-28 double-overtime victory on Saturday.
Bowdoin jumped ahead in the early going after forcing an Amherst three-and-out on the first possession of the contest. The Jeffs attempted a quick punt in an effort to surprise Bowdoin, but the effort backfired as quarterback Mark Moseley had his kick blocked by Polar Bear Rich Florence, giving Bowdoin great field position at the Amherst 25-yard line.
Colby 23, Middlebury 6
WATERVILLE – Justin Smith went 20-for-29 and threw for 242 yards to lead Colby College to a 23-6 win over Middlebury College in football action Saturday afternoon.
The White Mules posted a 16-0 lead at the end of the first on a pair of touchdowns by Nial DeMena and a 22-yard field goal by John Goss.

Bowdoin 5, Amherst 0
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin College field hockey team scored five first-half goals in their 5-0 victory over Amherst Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 4-2, while Amherst drops to 4-3.
Bowdoin took control early in the contest scoring through a scramble off the corner by team Marissa O’Neil at 31:21.
The Polar Bears continued to dominate play with a blast from Taryn King off a rebound from Colleen McDonald; two minutes later O’Neil added her second of the day off penalty corner.
Worcester 4, USM 0
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Ann Clark scored a pair of goals and dished out one assist to lead Worcester State College to a dominating 4-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon. Clark set up junior Courtney Vogel for the first goal just 65 seconds into the game. Clark doubled the lead at the 11:28 mark by converting a feed from junior Andrea McAllister on a penalty corner.
Tufts 3, Bates 0
MEDFORD, Mass. – Senior Dana Panzer and junior Lea Napolitano provided all of the scoring action as Tufts blanked Bates 3-0 in field hockey action Saturday.
The Jumbos (2-2) earned 25 penalty corners and needed only one save from sophomore goalies Marilyn Duffy-Cabana and Angela Rappoli as they combined for the shutout.
Men’s soccer
Amherst 1, Bowdoin 0
BRUNSWICK- Joe Gannon scored the game’s only goal with less than 30 minutes left in regulation as Amherst College downed Bowdoin 1-0 in men’s soccer Saturday.
Gannon was able to slip past the Polar Bears’ defense to capitalize on a breakaway with a blast to the top of the net.
Keene State 4, USM 3
KEENE, N.H.- Eric Scott scored his second goal of the match late in the first sudden death overtime period to give the Keene State College Owls a 4-3 triumph over the University of Southern Maine before a rain-soaked homecoming crowd Saturday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex.
Scott ended the match in dramatic fashion, collecting his own rebound at the top of box and firing a skipping, 25-yard shot past the Huskies goalkeeper Chris Willard.
Bates 5, Tufts 2
MEDFORD, Mass. – Junior Terence O’Connell broke the game open in the 72nd minute and added another goal for insurance 13 minutes later as Bates overpowered Tufts 5-2 in men’s soccer action Saturday.
Bobcat (5-1) freshman Brent Morin booted an unassisted goal in the 40th minute to give Bates a 2-1 lead at the half. Bates improved on its lead six minutes into the second half when junior David Shear sent a long shot just to the right of the Jumbos (3-3-1) keeper.
Women’s soccer
Amherst 4, Bowdoin 0
BRUNSWICK – Amy Armstrong scored the only goal Amherst would need at 12:55 of the first half by squeezing a long shot from the top of the box to lift the Lord Jeffs to a 4-0 win over Bowdoin College in women’s soccer action Saturday.
Amherst tallied three more goals in the second half after converting a corner kick attempt that was juggled in front of the Bowdoin goal, and finally kicked through by Ashley Harmerling at 28:41.
Tufts 2, Bates 1
MEDFORD, Mass. – Lauren Fedore struck the ball from inside the 18, sending it through the keeper’s outstretched hands to lift Tufts to a 2-1 win over Bates College in NESCAC soccer action Saturday.
Sarah Gebb gave the Jumbos the early lead, scoring just eight minutes into the first half and setting the stage for Fedore’s game-winning goal.
The Bobcats’ Meg Coffin scored their lone goal on a corner kick.
Middlebury 3, Colby 1
WATERVILLE – Mayo Fujii scored two goals as Middlebury remained undefeated with a 3-1 win over Colby in women’s soccer action Saturday.
The Panthers (6-0) received an insurance goal from Laura Kwoh with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game.
White Mules (3-3-1) forward Christina Andaya prevented the shutout with a conversion from Jenny Rutherford with just 6:33 left to play.
