LEWISTON – It was a game that had Rick Meyers a little concerned.
He knew the Mt. Blue girls’ soccer team’s losing record was deceiving. Toss in the fact that it was a morning game and a slick field, making the Lewiston coach more apprehensive.
“I was kind of worried,” said Meyers.
“This team is a pretty good team. They’ve been losing just barely to everybody.”
But if the Blue Devils are on their game, they can be tough to stop. Lewiston got the offense going early and never relented in a 6-0 victory over the Cougars (2-9) Saturday morning.
“We know we can play with the top teams if we play like we did today,” said Meyers, whose club was ranked fourth in the latest Eastern A standings. “We’ve had some highs and lows this year, but they’re really making an effort to be able to play with those teams.”
Laura Martel had three goals and an assist for Lewiston (7-3) while Tracy Bradley scored twice. Kelsey Varney also had a goal, and Alison Coleman posted the shutout in goal.
“We’ve played a lot better than this,” said Mt. Blue coach Dave Ronald. “It’s been an up-and-down season. We’ve played some incredible games, beating Waterville, a double overtime loss to Morse. We took Oxford Hills hard, losing 2-1. We just didn’t play our game today.”
Lewiston controlled the midfield and spent much of the game setting up its offense and keeping Cougar keeper Caitlin Scott busy. Bradley’s goals came off corner kicks, and Varney’s was the result of a direct kick.
“We’ve been working on our set plays and our corner kicks and direct kicks,” said Meyers. “We’ve been putting some effort into them in practice, and they’ve been paying off.”
Martel scored the first two. She put a foot on a loose ball in front with 20:32 left in the half. Then with 7:31 remaining, she converted a nice pass by Kaitlynn Pike for a breakaway.
“A lot of other coaches had told me about Laura Martel, and they weren’t kidding,” said Ronald. “She’s got the speed. She’s got the strength. She’s got the shot. She’s the whole package.”
A Martel corner was headed in by Bradley at 3:31 of the second half. Varney made it 4-0 off a direct kick. Bradley scored her second off a Kelsey Rodrigue corner before Martel completed the hat trick in the closing seconds.
“We’ve also been really working on the possession game,” said Meyers. “We’ve done a lot of possession drills. You could see it happening today. They would take their time and make the passes.”
