The Strong Historical Society has recieved information from Donald McKeen, Wilton, concerning the first cheese factory to be operated in Maine, now the residence of Mrs. Gelia Hutchins, Upper Main Street. According to McKeen, in April of 1871 a group of farmers from Strong and vicinity met in Strong to organize the Sandy River Cheese Company. It is believed the idea for a factory for the exclusive manufacture of cheese came from a meeting of the board of agriculture held in Farmington early in 1871 where one day was devoted to associated dairying, including factories for the manufacturing of cheese. This was a new idea in Maine, said McKeen, although it had been tried in other states as early as 1850.
