GREEN BAY, Wis. – The New York Giants legitimized their fast start Sunday by leaving Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers wobbly.

Tiki Barber rushed for 182 yards and scored on a 52-yard touchdown run, and Kurt Warner threw a touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey in a 14-7 victory at Lambeau Field, where Favre was knocked from the game with a head injury.

The Giants improved to 3-1 despite a series of missed opportunities, including three errant field goal attempts by Steve Christie.

The Packers, mired in a mess with cornerback Mike McKenzie and trying to overcome infighting and injuries, fell to 1-3 for the first time since 1993 and have their first three-game losing streak under fifth-year coach Mike Sherman.

The Packers had one last chance to avoid the upset when Christie missed from 33 yards with 26 seconds left, but third-string quarterback Craig Nall hit Robert Ferguson at the New York 32 down the middle of the field and the clocked expired before the Packers could spike the ball.

Steelers 28, Bengals 17

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t need quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to win games, just to keep from losing them. With victories in two promising starts, he’s doing just fine.

Roethlisberger, showing uncommon poise for a rookie who wasn’t expected to play this season, twice rallied the Steelers (3-1) and Duce Staley ran for 123 yards in a 28-17 victory Sunday over the Cincinnati Bengals (1-3).

“You can just see him coming into his own,” wide receiver Plaxico Burress said. “He doesn’t let anything bother him, and that’s what I like about him.”

Broncos 16, Bucs 13

TAMPA, Fla. – John Lynch will remember it as the touchdown-saving hit he was too much of a gentleman to make. Fortunately for Denver, the mistake didn’t ruin the safety’s emotional return to Tampa Bay.

Jake Plummer threw a 5-yard TD pass to Patrick Hape and Jason Elam kicked three field goals Sunday to give the Broncos a 16-13 victory over the winless Buccaneers, whose only touchdown came on a play in which Lynch failed to knock down a receiver who was getting up off the ground.

Instead, Lynch merely touched Michael Clayton on the back, thinking the rookie was down. Clayton, whose helmet was knocked off when his head was brushed by Lynch’s knee, stood and took off for the end zone to complete a 51-yard pass play.

Colts 24, Jaguars 17

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Peyton Manning was perfect when he needed to be against Jacksonville’s vaunted defense.

Manning was 14-for-14 for 149 yards on three touchdown drives to lead the Indianapolis Colts to a 24-17 victory Sunday against the previously unbeaten Jaguars.

Jacksonville (3-1) played a fourth consecutive close game – they won the first three by a combined seven points – but couldn’t pull this one out.

After Edgerrin James’ 3-yard touchdown run gave the Colts a 24-17 lead, Jacksonville drove into Indy territory with less than two minutes to play. But Fred Taylor came up short on fourth-and-1, and the Colts (3-1) ran out the clock from there.

Eagles 19, Bears 9

CHICAGO – It’s going to take a really good team to stop the red-hot Philadelphia Eagles. Right now, mediocre is a reach for the Chicago Bears.

David Akers kicked four field goals, Donovan McNabb threw for 237 yards and a touchdown, and the Eagles picked apart the injury-riddled Bears in a 19-9 victory Sunday.

Terrell Owens caught eight passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, which he celebrated with sit-ups in the end zone. Brian Westbrook ran for 115 yards and caught nine passes for 63 yards as the Eagles improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1993.

Falcons 27, Panthers 10

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carolina Panthers finally found a way to contain Michael Vick.

It didn’t matter.

The Atlanta Falcons still found a way to win, moving to 4-0 to match the best start in franchise history.

Warrick Dunn had a 38-yard touchdown run and Kevin Mathis returned an interception 35 yards for another score to lead Atlanta to a 27-10 victory over Carolina on Sunday. The Falcons last opened the season 4-0 in 1986.

They won without the typical one-man show Vick usually puts on against the Panthers (1-2).

Jets 17, Dolphins 9

MIAMI – The New York Jets played takeaway Sunday – as does every defense that faces the winless Miami Dolphins.

The Jets came up with four turnovers by Jay Fiedler in the second half, including an interception returned 66 yards for a touchdown by Donnie Abraham, and won 17-9 to improve to 3-0 for only the third time in franchise history.

New York also won its first three games in 1966 and 2000.

The Dolphins fell to 0-4 for the first time since their expansion season in 1966. They’ve scored two touchdowns this year while committing 14 turnovers and will need dramatic improvement on offense to avoid the

Texans 30, Raiders 17

HOUSTON – After 36 games, the Houston Texans have the first winning streak in team history. That means it’s finally time for a haircut, David Carr.

Carr vowed last September that he wouldn’t cut his hair again until the Texans won consecutive games. It’s taken so long his wife has even come to enjoy his shaggy look. Still, he can happily head to the barber – perhaps just for a trim – following a 30-17 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

Maybe his defensive teammates will get a few snips, considering they made it possible by harassing Raiders new starting quarterback Kerry Collins into five turnovers, including each of his last four drives.

Browns 17, Redskins 13

CLEVELAND – Finally on the field, Lee Suggs got the Cleveland Browns running in the right direction.

Suggs, who missed Cleveland’s first three games with a neck injury, rushed for 82 yards and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, leading the Browns to a 17-13 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

From his first carry of the season, a 25-yard dash in the first quarter, the speedy Suggs gave the Browns (2-2) the spark that their ground game had been missing.

Chargers 38, Titans 17

SAN DIEGO – While LaDainian Tomlinson was as shifty as ever, Drew Brees played as if he had something to prove.

Brees, who’s had a tenuous grip on his job since last season, threw for three touchdowns Sunday, including a 58-yarder to Reche Caldwell midway through the fourth quarter, and Tomlinson rushed for 147 yards and one touchdown to lead the Chargers to a 38-17 win over the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans (1-3) played without quarterback Steve McNair, who was reduced to being the emergency third quarterback after bruising his sternum in a loss to Jacksonville last week.

Billy Volek threw for 278 yards and two TDs, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Titans from losing their third straight.
