OXFORD – Hughe M. Polland, 84, of Rabbit Valley Rd., died at Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center Sunday evening after a courageous battle with cancer.

Hughe was born on April 23, 1920 in Rabbit Valley in Oxford, a son of George A. and Eva Woodsom Polland.

Educated in Oxford schools, he entered the Army in 1944 and was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Hughe worked at Reid’s Garage until 1962 when he purchased the former Brett Garage.

Hughe was a man that could fix anything, and if he couldn’t find the right part he would make it himself. He had many jobs in his life, a few being a mechanic, lumberman, trapper, construction worker, seafood salesman and a welder at Bath Iron Works.

As an expert rifleman, his leisure time was spent hunting, fishing and camping. Hughe loved to tell stories about his great outdoor adventures with his friends and family, which they all loved to hear. His favorite spot was in the West Forks.

Surviving are his wife, Leora Stratton Polland; two sons, Orville H., and his wife, Eleanor, of East Oxford; Jimmie D., and his wife, Anitha, of Stockholm, Sweden; two daughters, Janette E. Plummer, and her husband, Greylin, of Raymond; Sally Korn, and her husband, Joe, of Oxford; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
