CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Three levels of the Sugarloaf Mountain base lodge will be filled when Upcountry Artists hold its annual art and craft show. The show will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.
More than 60 members will display their work in the Maple, Oak and King Pine rooms. There is no admission fee.
Exhibitors will show paintings, photography, furniture, clothing, jewelry, baskets, pottery, dried floral arrangements, handmade soaps, quilts and stained glass. Twenty-two artists are returning this year, including Upcountry Artists President Kika Nigals, who’s showing her series of boat paintings done in oils, as well as new watercolor landscapes. Also returning are the show coordinators, Stan and Barb Keirstead, and artists Mary Beth Morrison, Selina Shields, Pam Ellis, Irene Duplissis and Tracy Medling.
The fine furniture line of W.A. Mitchell will be available, as well as Fred O. Smith’s country pine designs. Other wooden creations include bowls by Joseph Ray and David Lancaster.
There will be more photography this year. In addition to the popular panoramic scenes of Scott Perry and the hand-tinted photos of Cynthia McIntyre, Leon Gin of Farmington will show his nature and travel photographs both in color and black-and-white. Local photographers Don Waterhouse of New Sharon, Stephen Leighton of Fort Fairfield, Craig Wratten of Winslow and Tiffany Teske of Kingfield will also have displays.
Pottery will be shown by Sue Kannally and Mary Spencer. Pat Johnson and Vicki Birden will offer quilted items; Joanne Smith will return with her many basket styles. Judy Loeve joins the show this year with her unique Ukrainian eggs, and Penny Hall’s booth will be devoted to handmade books.
Jewelers include new member Sean Jackman showing handcrafted gold and silver jewelry along with returning artists Karen Campbell and Debbie Auch. Floral arrangements and handmade soaps by Julia Staples, metal designs by Karen Crouse, stained glass by Jan Royal, Karen Ladd and Mark Wren, and outerwear by Peg Gallant, Wendy Furey and Janet Kennedy will be part of the show.
This annual show provides the group the funding to continue promoting and encouraging the arts in the area. Scholarships are awarded annually by the group, as well as support given to Foothills Camp and the Farmington Art in the Park. New members are always welcome. Meetings are held from September to June. More information may be obtained on the group’s new Web site at www.upcountryartists.com.
