TURNER – A local egg farm worker was arrested by drug agents Wednesday and charged with dealing cocaine from his home on the farm.
Juan Gonzales, 21, was charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine after Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputies and Maine Drug Enforcement agents searched his truck.
Gonzales is originally from Texas but has been working at the former DeCoster Egg Farm for about a year, police said.
Investigators said they found two handguns in Gonzales’ Chevrolet Tahoe as well as a small amount of cocaine and about $5,000 in cash and checks. The truck was parked outside Gonzales’ trailer at the time, police said.
The money is believed to be proceeds from drug sales. Of that money, $3,175 was in cash and $1,611 was in five checks that had been signed over to Gonzales by other DeCoster workers, investigators said.
The charge against Gonzales is considered aggravated because of the guns found with the drugs and money, according to MDEA Supervisor Gerry Baril. Investigators seized a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun and a .357 revolver in the raid. Police said a clip loaded with bullets was found next to the .22.
When police and drug agents went to the farm Wednesday afternoon, they had the cooperation of a DeCoster manager, who was told about the planned raid, police said.
Baril described the arrest as the result of an ongoing investigation by the Sheriff’s Department and the MDEA.
Gonzales was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, where he remained Wednesday night.
