LEWISTON – Jules D. Baribault, of 62 Lessard St., Lewiston, died peacefully in the presence of devoted family members at D’Youville Pavillion Thursday, Oct. 7.
Born in Lewiston Nov. 4, 1924, he was one of six children of Edouard S. and Marie F. Pare Baribault of Scribner Boulevard. He attended Holy Cross School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1940.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant in 1945, after serving in the western Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Gilbert Islands.
Upon completing a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Illinois, he married Marguerite M. Moreau, his bride of 54 years.
He was a Shell Oil Co. engineer for 35 years, working primarily in offshore energy production in coastal Louisiana. He contributed a number of innovations in enhanced oil recovery and storage, structural coatings and best maintenance practices.
Foremost in his life was providing seven children with a happy home and loving guidance along with his devoted wife, Marguerite. From their first home in New Orleans they moved to Franklin, La., and then to Metairie as the family grew in size.
He enjoyed camping, home repair, visits to the beach, trips to Maine, family gatherings, and Cajun cuisine.
He was an avid civic volunteer as well. He served as an organizer for the local area council of the Boy Scouts of America, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Airline Park Civic Association. Jules also belonged to the American Legion, VFW, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was a licensed professional engineer in Louisiana.
Upon retirement, he pursued his interests in community planning and drainage safety in the New Orleans area and in Louisiana coastal wetlands protection.
He eventually returned to Lewiston to enjoy the company of sisters and brothers, and continued to blossom as an inspiration for all. Love, understanding, humor, determination, and courage in the face of pain are the hallmarks of this wonderful man who will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; and sister, Gertrude Frateschi.
He is also survived by his seven children, Rachel Kent and her husband, Steve, of Boston, Tom Baribault and his wife, Ann, of Burlington, Vt., Carl Baribault and his wife, Sandra, of New Orleans, Helene Blank and her husband, Barry of Memphis, Ann Bankson and her husband, Daniel, of Seattle, Dan Baribault of St. Louis, and Rey Baribault and his wife, Sally, of Dallas; along with 10 grandchildren.
