LEWISTON – Songwriter Carole King, whose ’60s and ’70s hits included “Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and “It’s Too Late,” will be knocking on doors in Lewiston Sunday and singing the praises of presidential candidate John Kerry.
As scheduled, King will be the guest at a “Momentum in Maine” rally at 5 p.m. Sunday at Lewiston Democratic headquarters, 110 Lisbon St. For a few hours before that, she’ll knock on doors in support of Kerry, the campaign said Friday. Earlier in the day she will be in Bangor.
“Carole King’s been traveling around the country,” said campaign spokesman Jesse Derris.
“I remember seeing her in a Kerry office in New York City in March, singing to the staff. She’s totally nice. We’re excited to have her,” he added
King’s canvassing will be part of this weekend’s “One Million Strong for Kerry: From Your House to the White House,” a national effort by Democrats to knock on 1 million doors in battleground states like Maine.
Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Lewiston and Bangor, has become a player in the election as polls show Bush and Kerry neck and neck. Polls indicate southern Maine’s 1st Congressional District leaning toward Kerry.
In recent days King has campaigned in New Hampshire. She has said she doesn’t support Kerry because he’s a Democrat, but because of the differences between the two candidates. She has said if Kerry were a Republican and George Bush a Democrat, she’d cross party lines and vote for Kerry.
On Saturday, the singer will be joined by former Gov. Angus King in Portland and Waterville. Gov. King has a family commitment on Sunday and cannot join the singer in Lewiston and Bangor, according to the campaign.
During her time in Lewiston, King will not be singing, Derris said.
