WOODSTOCK – The red-and-white Rob Cameron for Senate signs have become a rarity in some Oxford County towns, where they disappear as quickly as they’re erected.
“Woodstock’s been a problem. Jay’s been a problem,” the Republican candidate said Monday, discussing numerous signs that have been stolen or run over. In Buckfield, he said, “We’re losing them down there, as well.”
Woodstock has been one of the worst spots for the lost signs, Cameron said. He’s sent about 40 to the area, and most that have been set up have disappeared.
And because Cameron is trying to stick to the rules, he has already found himself at a disadvantage against some competitors, he said. “Illegal signs are rampant throughout the district.”
Signs aren’t supposed to be placed more than six weeks before the election, and they’re supposed to be at least 250 feet away from any polling stations, he said. He has seen signs violating these and other rules during this election season, he added.
Woodstock residents contacted for this story were reluctant to comment on the missing-sign problem.
Cameron said he may know who has been taking the signs and doesn’t believe the person is from Woodstock. He said he did not want to identify the person because he has no proof of involvement.
“We can replace (the signs) right now, but if it continues to happen, then we’ll just be out of luck,” he said.
The problem, Cameron explained, is that it will soon be too late to have more signs printed in time for the Nov. 2 election.
