FARMINGTON – Mable Wahl Kahkonen, 97, of Farmington, formerly of Eustis, died Thursday, Oct. 7, at Edgewood Manor Rehabilitation and Living Center.

She and her twin sister, Mildred, were born June 27, 1907, in the small town of Flagstaff, to “Pete” and Julia Wahl.

For many years, she worked with her husband, Willey Kahkonen, as a cook at many logging camps in Alder Stream and northern Maine.

After Willey’s death in 1967, she devoted time to her hobbies and love of animals in her humble home, “Echo Hollow.” She owned and cared for many dogs, cats, and two pet skunks; loving and feeding all creatures, great and small.

Mable’s other hobbies included fishing and making “weather sticks.” Her love of the outdoors led her seasonally straight to the blueberry fields near her home. She picked hundreds of quarts for others each year.

During winter months, she knitted many hats, socks, mittens and potholders, all of which were given away to folks who visited throughout the year.

She leaves her nieces and nephews an example of hard work, simple living and a legacy of many generational stories to be shared.

She was predeceased by all of her siblings.
