DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Charter Meeting Room. The annual election of officers will be held, and Peter Stowell will speak on the Stanley/Stowell connection in Dixfield. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Storytelling

MEXICO – The Mexico Public Library will host an evening of storytelling on Thursday, Oct. 14. The special guest will be Billie Gammon of Livermore, who will take on the character of a woman from the 19th century, the “Widow Carver.” From her portrayal in period costume, the audience will learn about Maine life during that era.

Hymn sing

RUMFORD – There will be a hymn sing at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Rumford United Methodist Church, Linnell Street.

The community is invited and asked to choose their favorite hymns and everyone will join in the music.

The evening will be directed by Jim Robertson as music leader and Jean Hersey at the piano. Kelley Harvell is pastor.

Chinese auction

DIXFIELD – The Dirigo Music Association will hold a Chinese auction and luncheon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Dirigo High School.

There are lots of items to win, including Portland Symphony tickets and signed photos of John Travolta and Kevin Eubanks from the “Tonight Show.” Monies raised will help support the music and arts programs in SAD 21. Voting explained

RUMFORD – Mexico Town Clerk Penney Duguay will explain voting procedures and answer questions on other town-related business at the Lunch and Learn program on Thursday, Oct. 21, at SeniorsPlus, Rumford Senior Center, 50 Congress St.

Duguay will speak at 11 a.m., with lunch to follow at 11:30 a.m. The menu will include boneless barbecue spareribs, homemade baked beans, broccoli slaw, cheese biscuit, apple pie and choice of coffee, tea or milk. A donation is asked of $2.50 for those 60 and over, their spouses, disabled and volunteers; $4 for those under 60. For reservations, call Kim at 364-3572.

Society speaker

RUMFORD – The Rumford Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, the Conference Room at the Municipal Building on Congress Street. Bill Weston, president of the association, will introduce Larry Glatz, who will speak about the history of Oxford County.

Glatz is chairman of the Oxford County Bicentennial Committee and will tell of their plans for celebrating the county’s 200th birthday in 2005. The meeting is open to the public.
