HALLOWELL – The Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta and the Gaslight Theater of Hallowell say they’ve planned “a literary evening of chills, thrills and fun.”

Their Spooktacular Read-a-thon will take place at the Higher Grounds, 119 Water St., from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.

Proceeds will go to both organizations, to train literacy tutors and provide local affordable entertainment.

Readers, who will have each raised pledges, will begin entertaining the audience with short stories, poems and other seasonally appropriate readings – both scary and funny – at 7 p.m.

Drinks, finger foods, mugs and glasses will be available for purchase. Door prizes will be given away. Raffle tickets will be sold that night for items including an overnight and breakfast for two at Maple Hill Farms Bed and Breakfast, a painting by local artist Tom Dix, a CD music selection donated by local musicians and a hand-blown Halloween ornament. Raffle tickets can be purchased ahead of time by calling Kellie Miller, (207) 623-2106 or by stopping at Higher Grounds any evening Tuesday through Saturday.

Readings are targeted to an adult population; alcoholic beverages will be served. Costumes are optional but encouraged for this Halloween Eve event. There is no cover charge but donations will be accepted to help the sponsoring organizations.
