NEW SHARON – A fire in a toaster Thursday spread to a wall and ceiling of a house trailer at 123 Main St. before firefighters could extinguish it. The household’s three family members and their cat escaped injury.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Bracket said the call came in about 6 p.m.

“A call came in as a toaster on fire,” he said, “We got here, and it had started up a wall and across the ceiling a little bit. We got it out and took down a section in the ceiling to make sure the fire hadn’t extended into the attic.”

The seven firefighters didn’t leave the scene until nearly 8:30 p.m., Brackett said, after also trying clear the smoke out of the building with an exhaust fan.

Brackett said he didn’t have the names of the family members Friday night because they had left before he could talk to them.

The United Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was called in, and a disaster relief volunteer assisted the family. Immediate lodging was secured for the fire victims; two Red Cross volunteers planned to make a food- and clothing-needs assessment Friday morning when the full extent of the family’s loss was known.
